Becoming Kama`aina
How Mainland Brands Establish Themselves in the Local Market
Wednesday, January 23

In the past decade, mainland brands have flocked to Hawaii, bringing greater selection and competitive pricing to local consumers. However, our islands present a unique challenge for out-of-state companies – we are geographically isolated, with a unique local culture and ethnically diverse population. How do mainland brands establish good reputations in Hawaii?

On January 23, find out how a national restaurant has integrated itself into the local landscape and the plans of one of the county’s most recognizable retailers as they open shop in our Islands. Our speakers are:

Eddie Spencer, senior general manager of California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). CPK’s restaurants are favorites for family outings and informal class reunions as well home to many “long time no see” sightings among friends and acquaintances. Sales at several of its branches rank among the highest per square foot in the nation.

Brie Heath, communications manager at Target. An iconic national brand and retailer, Target is scheduled to open its first Hawaii stores in 2009.

Special benefit:
Everyone who attends will be entered in a random drawing for a 50 percent savings on a one-year IABC membership:

Playing With the Big Boys
How Strong Local Brands Handle National Competition
Wednesday, November 14

More and more, national companies are targeting the Hawaii marketplace and going head to head with local businesses. How do kama`aina companies gear up to compete? What strategies keep their brand strong with consumers, vendors and employees? And what happens when a local start up takes on national brands that already have a foothold in the Islands?

Our speakers are:
Mark Fergusson, CEO and CFO of Down to Earth, the state’s largest natural foods retail chain

Bill Jarvis, President & CEO of Mobi PCS, the only locally operated wireless network in the state.

Join us as they share how their Hawaii born-and-bred companies successfully compete.

The Early Early News
The Changing TV Morning News Market in Hawaii
Wednesday, September 12

Often the first news of the day that Hawaii residents take in is a local television morning show. With the entry of KGMB 9’s new morning show on Sept. 17, viewers will have choices on all the local news affiliates. How will this affect an already competitive market? What changes can viewers expect in the delivery of their initial news of the day?

And for your organization, what kind of audience demographic can you reach through the morning shows? How is it different than the 6 or 10 p.m. news? How can your organization best deliver information to that audience?

Our speakers are Howard Dicus, correspondent for “Sunrise on KGMB 9," Dan Meisenzahl, co-anchor of “KITV 4 Island Television News This Morning," and Kristine Uyeno, morning anchor of "KHNL 8."

Howard Dicus will cover business news on KGMB’s morning show. He previously appeared on-camera with KHON’s morning show, where he reported on Hawaii’s business scene. He also provides business news for Hawaii Public Television and PBS Hawaii and was the web and broadcast editor at Pacific Business News. Dicus spent thirty years working in radio journalism in Washington, D.C., before coming to Hawaii.

Dan Meisenzahl has anchor duties on KITV’s morning show since 2005. A veteran at the ABC affiliate, he first joined KITV in 1997 and has worked in the sports and news departments. He started in Hawaii’s television news market as a news producer at KHNL 8.

Kristine Uyeno joined KHNL News 8 in January 2006. She returned home to Hawaii after spending more than eight years on the Mainland. Previously, she worked as an anchor/reporter for KVWB/KFBT in Las Vegas. Prior to that, Kristine spent 3 ½ years anchoring and reporting for NorthWest Cable News in Seattle and Portland. She has also served as an anchor/reporter for KTVM in Bozeman, Montana. Locally, Kristine recently worked at "Pacific Business News" and anchored the morning business segments on KITV.

How to Avoid a Crisis in your Business
Communication strategies for Businesses in a Statewide Pandemic
Wednesday, Aug 8

Speakers Chiyome Fukino, Director of the State Department of Health, and Janice Okubo, Communications Director for the State Department of Health, will discuss how to prevent and manage a business crisis in the event of a pandemic, and how a health-related emergency affects traditional communication strategies among businesses, communities and the state.

Dr. Fukino has recently coordinated statewide efforts to bring Hawaii to become a national frontrunner in pandemic planning and training activities. Knowing the essential role of communication in facing large-scale health-related crises, this seminar will address how businesses can utilize effective communication methods to streamline emergency operations and be internally prepared for a pandemic situation.

Chiyome Leinaala Fukino, M.D. became the Director of the Hawaii State Health Department in December 2002. Dr. Fukino is the chief health and environmental official for the state. She heads one of Hawaii’s largest agencies as it serves the community with over 100 programs aimed at providing leadership to monitor, promote, protect, and enhance the health and environmental well-being of all of Hawaii's people.Fukino brings to the director’s office a great depth of experience working within the local healthcare community. Prior to taking the helm of DOH, Fukino had been in private practice in Hawaii since 1985, specializing in internal medicine. She was also a member of the medical staff of Leahi Hospital, a board member of the Queen’s Medical Center and the medical director of the Queen’s Physician Group from 1996 to 1999.

Dr. Fukino was also honored by the Hawaii Medical Association in 2005 with the first ever HMA President’s Award recognizing her outstanding contribution to the medical community. Dr. Fukino was chosen for successfully applying her skills and talents as a physician to meet the challenge of directing one of the largest departments in the State of Hawaii. One of Fukino’s many passions is the improvement of healthcare for Native Hawaiians. Her research projects have included Native Hawaiian health curriculum for children and parents as well as AIDS Education. She has also worked to explore the role of ancient Hawaiian healing practices in the modern medical arena. A graduate of Kamehameha Schools, she received her undergraduate degree in psychology from Brandeis University and her medical degree from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Janice Okubo joined the Hawaii State Department of Health as its Communications Director in 2000.
